* Recent published research by Newcastle and Diabetes UK have linked following a VLCD Plan with the reversal or reduction in Type 2 Diabetes. 

In the study around 30 dieters with Type 2 Diabetes followed a VLCD Plan with huge success and on average lost just over 2 stone each.  Following the VLCD route meant that whilst reducing their weight they also decreased the stored fat in their pancreas, which returned their insulin production to normal or significantly decreased it.

Create salad bowls, homemade soup or pick box each day from the choices below or a mixture.

The Newcastle Diet Plan suggests adding approximately 250g of low gi / gl vegetables salad per day. Ideally you should consume them in 3 separate portions.  If weight loss required is significant, it is suggested that vegetables and salad are added once you have settled into your plan.  This should be checked with your Doctor, Health Practioner or Newcastle University Study Team.

Try different lettuces such as rocket and crispy leaf, try adding different types of fat free, low calorie dressings to add some different flavours, our Walden Farm Salad Dressings are perfect for the Newcastle Diet. Using herbs and vinegars can also help with flavour. 

VEGETABLES: You should eat a total of 3-4 portions of vegetables per day.
This can be as 2 vegetable meals e.g. homemade soup or salad at lunchtime and stir fry or roasted Mediterranean vegetables in the evening. Alternatively you may prefer to have 1 vegetable meal and 2 vegetable snacks per day. Try to have at least 1 portion of green leafy veg per day.
 
Avoid boiling veg if possible as nutrients will be lost in the cooking water – steam, microwave or roast instead. A portion of vegetables is around 80g (a good handful for most veg, more for leaves).

- Raw veg e.g. sugar snap peas, cubes of raw turnip, sliced peppers

- Carrot and celery sticks with homemade salsa: Ø For the salsa, finely chop 4 fresh plum tomatoes, 1 bunch of rocket and 1 bunch of flat leafed parsley and mix together Ø Chop carrots and celery into 4cm sticks and dip in the salsa

KeeDiet Safe Slimming Guidance 
  1. The KeeDiet® comply with guidelines introduced by NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence)

  2. Diet Plans are not suitable for everyone, for example those under 18 years old or pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. Please consult your doctor before starting any weight loss regime. If you have any health issues, are taking medication or have a medical condition it is imperative that you consult your doctor to confirm this plan is suitable before commencing click here for further guidance.

  3. Total Food Replacement/Very Low Calorie Diet (TFR/VLCD) diets require medical approval and supervision. We advise that you should visit your Doctor every four weeks to request a blood pressure and health check.

  4. A preparation phase is recommended, after you have placed your order and before starting you plan, increase your water consumption and gently reduce your sugars, carbohydrates and unhealthy snacks.

  5. The basic Fast Fix Diet can be considered by most dieters with a BMI 30 - 40 with more than one stone to lose before reaching a healthy BMI 25.  The original BMI Calculator is not always a true reflection of one's body fat, especially for men or those more toned and muscular.  With men in mind the waist size is also a good indicator, men's maximum waist should be 94cm (37 inches) a womans 80cm (31.5cm).  If above these measurements it is recommend that you drop weight to reduce.

  6. It is suggested for those with a BMI 40+ or above 17 Stone, taller men and ladies and those with labour intense jobs consider a higher calorie plan, possibly our Lean & Low Plan or New YouPlan or 5:2 Diet Plan as better suited. For heavier clients, this will allow a more gradual control and reduction in calories. Weight loss will still be significant as more calories are required in the early stages of weight loss due to a person’s size/weight. Moving down to lower calorie plans can then be considered as your weight and BMI reduce.

  7. You may follow our Faast Fix Plan for a maximum period of 8 continuous weeks. After following for 8 continuous weeks you must stop. If you have reached your BMI 25 or goal weight then follow our Weight Stabilisation Phase to lock in your results. If you haven't yet reached your BMI 25 or goal weight, follow our TFR Week Break before returning to your original plan or change plans (ensure you confirm with your Doctor that it is safe to continue on your plan before returning for a second cycle).

  8. Exercise should be limited due to the minimal calorie intake and a period of approximately 2-3 weeks allowed to settle into your plan. Consider light toning exercise, yoga, walking, or toning exercise. High impact training should be avoided.

  9. A mild Ketogenic condition may be achieved following this plan and you may experience some Common side effects in the early stages of this diet plan. These may include headaches, nausea and fatigue etc. If symptoms persist or you feel concerned, you should stop the diet and immediately seek medical advice.

  10. For your safety, alcohol should not be consumed whilst following a weight loss plan which is sufficiently low in calories, restricts sugar and carbohydrates. Consuming alcohol may be dangerous and in extreme cases may even cause death or long term health conditions. If intending to drink alcohol it is advised that you stop a carbohydrate / sugar restrictive diet and we suggest you follow a healthy eating plan at least 48 hours prior to drinking alcohol​

Possible Side Effects

During the first few days and phase of the diet, you may experience some symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, tiredness, hunger, body temperature drop.  These are all expected and noted as common side effects whilst you body adjust to using your stored body fat for energy and you adapt to a lower calorie intake.  It is expected that these symptoms should subside or disappear gradually after 3-4 days.

NEWCASTLE DIET RESEARCH INFORMATION
​Summary

The raised blood glucose levels in Type 2 diabetes are due to a combination of a reduced amount of insulin secreted from the pancreas gland and the insulin not working properly to control glucose particularly at the level of the liver. Glucose is stored in the liver and we use glucose stored in the liver when we are not eating.  In Type 2 diabetes too much glucose is released from the liver when we are not eating because it is not sensitive to insulin.

In 2011 a research group at the University of Newcastle, led by Professor Roy Taylor, invited 11 people with Type 2 diabetes with a body mass index (weight corrected for height - the normal is under 25 kg/m2) of 33 kg/m2 and placed them on a severely restricted energy intake for 8 weeks. Their fasting blood glucose level fell from 9 to 6 mmol/l within a week. The blood glucose levels remained normal throughout the study.

Over the course of 8 weeks their weight dropped from 101 to 88 kg which meant that their body mass index went down from 33 to 29 kg/m2. Measurements of fat within the liver and the pancreas gland showed that the weight loss was associated with a reduced amount of fat in the liver and the pancreas. The amount of insulin coming out of the pancreas increased and the action of insulin on the liver was improved with the substantial weight loss. This experiment was designed to prove that the high glucose levels in Type 2 diabetes are a result of too much fat in the liver and in the pancreas gland. It proved that with a substantial loss of weight (more than 10 kg), glucose levels in diabetes are lowered and a number of people will be cured of their Type 2 diabetes.

 

Newcastle Diet Information taken from the Public Document

Since the publication of the research paper a number of people from around the world have adopted similar calorie restrictions and they too have lost substantial amounts of weight and their glucoselevels have similarly improved.  It may be that you would like to attempt significant weight loss in a short space of time using this form of calorie reduction.  The diet in the experiment used a liquid diet formula (Optifast), containing carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.  The liquid diet used is very similar to the KeeDiet MRP/VLCD MealPacks and needs to provide 600 calories per day.  This is supplemented by 3 portions of non-starchy vegetables a day, which brings the total calorie intake to 800 daily calories.  It is also extremely important to drink lots of calorie-free fluids each day and we recommend 2-3 litres of still or sparkling water.

Substantial weight loss provides some people with Type 2 Diabetes a way of normalising their glucose levels.  The short-term severe calorie restriction using the liquid diet formula supplemented with non-starchy vegetables, and a high fluid intake is a quick and safe way of losing a lot of weight.  This dramatic and rapid rate reduction is not for everybody and you should discuss your personal circumstances with your Doctor or a healthcare professional just to make sure it is safe for you to follow and if any changes to medication are required before you start.  Some people may also prefer a more gentle approach and this can also be discussed with your Doctor or Healthcare Professional as well.

In the experiment, people continued the calorie restriction phase for 8 weeks and everybody in the experiment was able to do this.  If you are not able to lose at least 2.5kg in the first week then it is less likely that you are going to be able to achieve a substantial weight loss. With this a consideration, you may wish to consider purchasing just 21 products to trial this plan and sample the KeeDiet products before committing to purchasing our 4 or 8 Week Newcastle Diet Plan.  You can then use the spare Mealpacks you have at the end of the 8 Week period to help stabilise your weight and for a gentle transition back to healthy eating.  However, most people do lose about 4kg in their first week, although a lot of this is water.  The length of diet depends on how much weight you want to lose.  Generally the longer you have had Diabetes the more weight you are going to need to lose to get the glucose levels to near normal or normal and for some people this will be 25% of their body weight.

We think it is a good treatment for people with less than 10 years of Type 2 Diabetes and understand that this calorie restrictive plan is not for everyone and that some who start the diet will not be able to continue with it.  In this situation you can continue to use the products as a diet aid and use alongisde other health foods to gradually reduce your weight.
